My name is Ben Helgeson. I'm a father of an Adams 12 child, and I live in Broomfield with my wife, Meg. After a 19 year career as an educator, I left to pursue another career opportunity as an outdoor guide and to better focus on my family. I enjoy the outdoors, attending my son's baseball games, and more. Above all, I have a passion for education and want to take my almost two decades of expertise to benefit the school district.
  • Keep schools safe by supporting our Student Resource Officers and upkeeping our security systems for schools
  • Support our teachers by breaking down barriers between them, parents, and the board
  • Fix our budget to ensure Adams 12 can maintain choice, programs, and more through its budget deficit
I am passionate about education policy, specifically how it relates to teachers. Adams 12 needs to work to retain its current teachers, and attract others through finding ways to provide top tier compensation, increasing professional development and support, and ensuring there is a trusting relationship between them, the district, and parents so challenges can be collaboratively addressed.
I believe that my background as a 19-year educator and an Adams 12 parent equips me with a unique set of qualities that would make me a successful officeholder. First and foremost, I have a deep commitment to the field of education and a profound understanding of the challenges and opportunities schools often face. My years of experience in the classroom have given me a strong foundation in the realities of education, and as a parent within Adams 12, I have a personal stake in the success of our schools.
The primary job of a school board member, in my view, is to serve as a representative and advocate for the community's educational interests. The way this is done is by to ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality education, that the district operates efficiently, and that the needs and concerns of parents, students, teachers, and the broader community are addressed. Board members must foster a positive learning environment, uphold educational standards, and work to build trust and transparency between the school district and its stakeholders such as parents.
My constituents are anyone who has a stake in Adams 12. I am running to serve kids, teachers, parents, and families. Moreover, while many residents do not have any kids in Adams 12 schools, these residents nonetheless pay property taxes to the district. Often times, good schools attract new residents and more tax revenue. It is in our interest to ensure both those with kids and those without kids in the district are kept in mind.
