Voter and candidate information

The Burbank Unified Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Elections are held at large on a staggered basis every odd-numbered year. Three seats were up for election in 2015, and two seats were up for election in 2017. A primary election was held on February 28, 2017. A general election could have been held on April 11, 2017, if candidates had not received a majority of the votes cast in the primary.[2][3][4][5][6]

To get on the ballot, school board candidates had to file their nomination paperwork by December 2, 2016. To qualify to run for a seat on the board, candidates had to be at least 18 years old, "a citizen of California, a resident of the school district, a registered voter, and not legally disqualified from holding civil office," according to the bylaws of the Burbank Unified Board of Education.[3][7]

The newcomer defeated an incumbent to win the seat, which had not happened in the district's past two election cycles. The district's 2013 and 2015 board of education elections saw newcomers elected to the board, but they all won open seats. Each incumbent who ran for re-election in 2013 and 2015 won an additional term on the board.
