What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
My top three priorities are as follows - First, we need to continue to support competitive compensation for all FCPS employees. As we face a tight labor market, as well as a nationwide teacher shortage, it's imperative that we continue the implementation of our new teacher salary scale and work to raise salaries for support staff and administrators. Our school system drives up property values and is regionally known for excellence. Let's recognize those who make that possible. Second, I want to advocate for increased school construction funding from state and local authorities. Due to massive housing growth in the southeastern portion of Frederick County, schools are overcrowded in one corner of the county (as well as parts of Frederick City) while many rural areas have significant excess capacity. As a Board member, I'll be an advocate for equitable school construction and renovation. Every student deserves to go to a school without portables and attend a school that's not forty or fifty years old. Finally, FCPS need to promote STEAM education in our schools (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). Over the past decade, we've seen a push towards STEM education, primarily as a result of the recent recession. While I don't dispute the importance of mathematicians or engineers, we need to make sure that that we're encouraging future artists, authors, and historians just as much as we promote STEM fields. Every FCPS student's academic or extracurricular passions should be celebrated, whether they be in STEM fields or in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I'm quite passionate about education funding policies. To me, public education is the primary responsibility of local government and the most important service government provides to its citizens. Therefore, government policy should reflect the importance of public education and fund it accordingly. We can certainly have an argument about tax rates and whether or not our county should have a flat or constant tax rate structure. That debate is not part of my job description (I'll leave that to the County Council and County Executive). However, we should expect elected officials to share our basic values. One of those basic values, to me, is the expectation that local government provide a well-managed, fiscally responsible, school system that serves the needs of a diverse population of students. I don't believe that's unreasonable to ask of local government officials.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I'm the youngest candidate in my race, so the events that shaped my life are vastly different than those of my competitors. For me, it's not one single event, but I do remember the beginning of the Great Recession and the financial crisis. As a ten-year-old kid, it was certainly scary to watch my parents' faces as we watched the news together. The recession was by far the formative event of my childhood.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I worked as a cashier at a Joann's fabric store for a little over a year. I doubt that there are many men my age who can cut and measure fabric as well as I can! It taught me valuable communication skills and how to deal with difficult people. It was a great first job!
Who are your constituents?
My constituents are, first and foremost, the citizens and taxpayers of Frederick County, MD. Additionally, while most of them don't vote for me, Board members should and need to serve the students of FCPS as well. We're certainly responsible to a broad array of people, including parents, students, families, residents, and taxpayers.
