Hi, I’m Dave Dock, long time local resident, parent, and grandparent here in Security-Widefield. My wife, Charlotte and I have raised our children here in the Widefield public school system. I’ve spent over 35 years in the accounting world, both For-profit and Non-profit (Fund Accounting). I know what it takes to find bottom line results. I also know the importance of treating people fairly and finding what works. I have a very optimistic outlook for our great Widefield school district 3. Many dedicated administrators, teachers and staff have worked so very hard over the years to make our local schools a success. It is now my pledge to help ensure we keep it that way. Our future generation deserves every possible opportunity for success and leadership potential. While we strive in a world of chaos, I believe many of the issues of the day could be solved through mutual respect for each other. When it comes to our daily journey, my hope and prayer is that you, along with your family will “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (LK 6:31)
  • Let’s Educate – Not Indoctrinate. Back to the basics of what school is all about. Our ongoing challenge is to raise our educational proficiencies, especially in reading, math and science. Our students have suffered in many ways over the past 18+ months. Our goal now is to make a comeback toward our standards of learning.
  • School safety and security is so crucial. We must continue to find the best solutions to secure our schools and protect our children, teachers and staff.
  • Parents are the key. I applaud the fact that our Widefield school district seeks parental involvement on so many levels, and I personally know many parents who willingly volunteer to assist in their students activities, such as marching band, sports programs, tutoring programs, and many more. But we need even greater parental participation. Let’s let parents be totally informed, and thereby becoming the deciding factor, in their child’s activities.
U.S. Schools-Our educational ranking is 37th among the world nations. We as a nation are better than that. The “dumbing down” of our entire educational standards in recent years has certainly created a disservice to our children. Statewide in Colorado, our 3rd graders are only reading at about 42% of standard proficiency levels.
I’m also passionate about school security and discipline. While our Widefield district admin and security officers have a well-intended process in place for disciplinary actions, we must maintain “consequences for actions”; this in itself leads toward criminal deterrents, and will help our young people as we seek to protect them from the violent tragedies we are currently experiencing in many schools across our country, on nearly a daily basis. Call me “old-school”, but I believe there are tried and true methods to this end.
There are two people I greatly admire: (1) My father: He had such wisdom. As a carpenter, he knew how to work with his hands. And as a father, family man and local community member, he knew how to treat people with respect. (2) Dr. Ben Carson: After an amazing career as a brain surgeon, he went back to the drawing board, and helped so many young people realize the importance of education. His personal educational foundation has sponsored hundreds of students to find a better life through educational opportunities. He said, “Education is the fundamental principle of what makes America a success. It is the foundation of what truly makes our country ‘The Land of Opportunity.’”
I love the film "Life of a King". Determined to help at-risk youths avoid the mistakes he made, an ex-con, Eugene Brown (Cuba Gooding Jr.) forms a chess club to offer them an alternative to running with street gangs, in Washington, D.C. Ultimately, this small endeavor leads to successful relationships at school, less drugs and increased learning success in at least one local school.
I am a "Big-Picture" person. I believe my experience has provided me with the ability to see the potential results to various decisions, and the wisdom to pursue what works best for all involved.
Positive Character Education: In years past, there was a great emphasis toward “Character Education” in the Widefield School District. My goal is to revive this optimistic program and further promote a positive attitude amongst all of our school district stakeholders.
The biggest event I recall, as a 10-year-old, was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Prior to that, I didn’t even know the meaning of the word “assassination”.
During my last two years in high school, I had the most coveted job in our small town of 500 people. I worked as a stocker and bagger at our local grocery store. Those years are full of great memories of the wonderful opportunities I was afforded to learn about good customer service, and how to work hard.
How to win friends and influence people, by Dale Carnegie. This book teaches us all how to treat other people, not only in how we communicate, but also in how we act toward others on a daily basis.
It’s a small world, after all,,, (Now it’s stuck in your head, right?)
Balancing career responsibilities with family commitments. This is a typical challenge for many, but it has always caused me to stop and think, “What’s important and what is not”.
Abe Lincoln said, "What happens in the school room in one generation will determine government and society in the next.". That's why school boards must resist attempts to politicize the classroom, focusing instead on education's real purpose - lifting differently talented kids from where they are to where they're capable of going…Potential!
Local district parents, staff and students.
Let's look at what has worked in the past, and also, glean the best ideas from multiple resources, including other successful schools.
Parents are the key. Gaining greater school district involvement on the part of parents is what will make our district a success. The old saying, "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" is what will create the buy-in from our local community of parents and other stakeholders.
Discipline methods, and creating/maintaining a true learning environment.
Good teaching comes from recruiting the best candidates, along with periodic reviews for each position. There are numerous standards of educational measurements. We can learn what works, make improvements to fine tune the process, and concentrate on improved outcomes for our students. Promoting great Communication - Positive communication within our community, and building strong relationships is key for the ultimate success of each and every student who walks the halls of our schools.
I like The Mill, and other creative learning events and classes already occurring in our school district. Let's expand upon this idea, because it is becoming apparent that "college is not for everyone", nor is the price tag. So we must be creative to promote successful programs, yielding a greater graduation percentage of students.
I would promote the ongoing process of securing any and all funding that we possibly can, through the various grants that are available for certain programs, along with the usual governmental funding sources.
George Santayana said, "Those who refuse to learn from history are condemned to repeat it". Every year we see multiple tragedies with regard to school shootings. In 2019-2020, there were approximate 220,000 teachers and staff assaulted in this country alone. Finding and refining our discipline methods, such that there are consequences for actions, is a fork in the path we must take, to better protect everyone involved.
Do you know the definition of a farmer? A man who is outstanding in his field!
Periodic Town Hall Meetings. This will be a forum where the school board members can actually listen (and learn) from parents and others who are involved in our local students education.
