Recall reports

An effort to recall City Councilwoman Diane Sharp did not qualify for the ballot in Hanford, California. The recall centered around the Northstar Courts affordable housing project in Hanford.[1][2]

Recall supporters

Kings County resident Jim Nelson filed the notice of intent to circulate a recall petition on April 12, 2022. The notice read in part, "Councilperson Sharp continues to demonstrate she has forgotten her duties as a responsible representative for the citizens of District C. ... She has lost control of her emotions during town hall meetings and been physically threatening towards attendees; the Northstar Project Town Hall meeting, for example."[2]

Recall opponents

Sharp offered the following comment on the recall campaign: "Recalls are part of our electoral system. ... This attempted filing is not a surprise ... a group of folks concerned about the impacts of the Northstar Courts development threatened via social media and in person weeks ago that if I did not vote in a way they liked regarding the project, they were going to attempt to throw me out of office."[2]

Sharp also commented on the Northstar Courts affordable housing project, saying, "There are pros and cons to the project. ... At this point, it doesn't really matter what I think about the project because the vote that we have on Tuesday night has turned into a risk-management vote. The city has received three letters from attorneys claiming that if we fail to approve the TEFRA bond they will sue us."[2]

Hanford City Clerk Natalie Corral rejected the initial notice of intent to circulate a recall petition on the grounds that it did not follow preliminary recall procedures.[2] A second petition against Sharp began circulating on May 17, 2022.[3]

Organizers needed to collect 1,550 signatures to force a special recall election to have been scheduled.[1] The recall effort ended after organizers did not submit signatures by the submission deadline.[4]
