Four seats on the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees were up for general election on November 4, 2014. The election was for Places 1, 2, 3 and 5.

Place 2 and 3 incumbents, Jaime Chavana and David Torres, respectively, chose not to seek re-election. In each election, two candidates faced off to take their seat. In Place 1, incumbent Juan "Sonny" Palacios Jr. won re-election against challenger Patricio Eronini. In Place 2, Eduardo "Eddie" Saenz Jr. lost to Oscar Salinas. Ellie Torres defeated John Rodriguez in the Place 3 contest. Place 5 incumbent Martin "Doc" Castillo was unseated by challenger Xavier Salinas.

Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District is located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The county seat is Edinburg. Hidalgo County was home to 818,942 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2012-2013 school year, Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District was the 37th-largest school district in Texas and served 33,673 students.[2]

Demographics

Hidalgo County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 15.9 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.7 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income was $34,146 compared to $51,900 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Hidalgo County was 34.8 percent compared to 17.6 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Edinburg Consolidated ISD Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. While they are elected to numbered positions, they serve the district at-large. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014.[4]

Candidates began filing nominating petitions on July 19, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was August 18, 2014.[5]
