What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Disrupting systems of inequality entails questioning the systems that exclude or other students and communities. To reset these systems the board must work with staff, students, and community leaders to craft policy changes that center and support diverse perspectives and experiences. Arts education is crucial in creating graduates who can work in teams, creatively solve problems, and seek out different perspectives. Arts education is a data driven means to closing achievement gaps and improving student success. Students should be able to access arts regardless of neighborhood or academic standing. Our state does not currently provide adequate education funding for our students. The board’s work includes lobbying and working with state officials to ensure our district has the resources needed for all students to succeed.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am passionate about reproductive rights and sexual violence because of my own personal experiences as a sexual assault survivor. I have served as a board member of NARAL ProChoice Oregon to work on public policy around reproductive justice.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Former Governor Barbara Roberts has been a huge inspiration since she was elected as Governor when I was a high school student. Her courage, advocacy for students, and her willingness to share wisdom are all reasons I admire her.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
To Kill a Mockingbird. The themes of equality, doing the right thing in the face of judgement, and how all people have value are crucial to my understanding of public service.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity, clarity on role, willingness to work hard, intelligence, curiosity, sense of dignity of all people.
