Three of the nine seats on the Hamilton Township School District school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Incumbents Anthony "Tony" Celentano and Pamela Kelly, along with Jessica Young, defeated incumbent Dina Thornton, Girard Casale and John Kroschwitz II to win the three seats up for election.[1]

The Hamilton Township school board consists of nine members elected to three-year terms at large by the district as a whole. Elections are staggered with three seats up for election each year. The general election was held on November 8, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]

Candidates for the school board must be 18 years old and registered to vote. They must have resided within the district for at least one year prior to their election or appointment. Candidates cannot concurrently hold office as mayor or as a member of the governing body of a municipality within the district. Board members cannot have been convicted of a felony. There are no term limits.[2]

Hamilton Township School District is located in Mercer County, New Jersey.

Hamilton Township School District is located in central New Jersey in Mercer County. The county seat is Trenton. Mercer County was home to 371,398 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the ninth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 12,114 students.[7]

Demographics

Mercer County underperformed in comparison to the state as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 39.8 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.4 percent of all state residents. The median household income for Mercer County was $74,118, compared to the statewide average of $72,062. The poverty rate for the county was 11.8 percent, while it was 10.8 percent statewide.[6]
