High-performing charter schools are charter schools that are specifically known for delivering quality education. Their performance may excel in a specific subject area, or may also refer to a school's likelihood of producing healthier, well-adjusted graduates.[1]
Benefits
A high-performing charter school is capable of providing a host of benefits to its students. Researchers from UCLA and the Rand Corp. showed a reduction in high-risk behavior in teens attending high-performing charter schools. It was unclear from the research if the nature of the schools provided causation rather than correlation of this trend, but results were consistent in the almost 1,000 students surveyed. Previous research demonstrating that minority students performed better under high expectations from teachers provides further support for the health and academic benefits of high-performing charter schools.[1]
Other research shows that even students from areas with historically low college graduation rates are substantially more likely to attend and graduate from college on time, when that student graduated from a high-performing charter school beforehand.[2]
