Ira Bernstein
Ira Bernstein was a 2010 Democratic candidate for District 2 of the New York State Senate. The primary election was on September 14, 2010, and the general election was on November 2.
Biography
Bernstein earned his B.S. from Stonybrook University, his M.Ed. from Bradley University in 1965, and his M.S. in economics from Columbia University in 1972. His professional experience includes working in the Commack School District.
Campaign themes
2010
- Education: Bernstein opposed reducing pensions for teachers and other public employees, as well as expanding charter schools. He also opposed furloughs and lower salaries for public employees -- notably teachers. Bernstein opposed the efforts of his opponent to make budget cuts to education.
- Taxes: Bernstein supported higher taxes on Wall Street.

Bernstein was uncontested in the September 14 primary. He was defeated by incumbent Republican John J. Flanagan in the general election on November 2.[1] In addition to running on the Democratic ticket, Bernstein ran on the Working Families ticket.

Bernstein has been a member of the AFL-CIO and the New York State United Teachers. He was Vice President of Brookhaven Senior Advisory from 2006 to 2009, and a member of the Ronkonkoma Revitalization Committee from 2008 to 2009.
