Candidate Connection

Jennie Sherwood participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 16, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Jennie Sherwood's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Expand the middle class Create a diverse career choice education Bring mental healthcare to all Nevadans[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Mental Healthcare is the secret weapon to the majority of our social ills. Let's not keep it a secret any longer, and bring the help people need the most to the people. We can make huge strides in homelessness, drug addiction, criminal behavior, and especially violent behavior if we only had the resources available to serve our community needs. I will work tirelessly to make sure those Mental Health resources are there for any and all who may benefit from them.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Jennie Sherwood answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

Malala Yousafzai because a bullet to the head can't and won't stop her! An endless and tireless advocate for woman's education, this great woman will stop at nothing to bring knowledge and power to ones that need it most. I can only wish, hope, and dream that I might someday, become half of the woman Malala is.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
My website www.jennie4nevada.com[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity and Trust is needed in an elected official even if it is lacking today. We, as a self governing nation, must be able to trust that our representatives have the upmost best intentions for their constituents even if they are not perfect and we don't always agree with every decision they make.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
As a journeywoman electrician, I have spent years on the job and years negotiating for the rights and benefits of workers across the valley. I know what it means to be on the job and how difficult it can be for working families to make ends meet. It means having a tireless work ethic, the ability to learn from those who are experts in the field how to improve your craft, and how to make sure a job is done right. These are the traits I would like to take to the state legislature, to fight for those on the job across our state.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The primary responsibility of anybody in elected office is to those who've elected them to office. That means listening to your constituents and being honest with them about where you stand on the issues and how you will represent their voice every day you are in office.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
A Nevada where everyone gets a chance at success.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
At the very young age of 9 I got my first glimpse at the AIDs epidemic, when a teacher of mine thought it would be wise for her not to attend the school swim party at a local water park because of "AIDs." Us curious kids of coursed asked her "what was that?" as she just brushed it off as a "never mind." So much fear and ignorance at the time, but I couldn't understand that. I assumed our great scientist would quickly solve the problem and the fear would dissipate. Instead for years & years later the fear and death toll only grew, with no hope in sight. I look back at that time as a colossal failure of what government is exactly for. Serve & Protect the citizens of the great United States of America.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
At the age of 16 and yearning for some independence I found a job at a local fast food restaurant. I quickly rose thru the ranks when at the age of 19, I left as an assistant manager to pursue a more career orientated field. Electricity![3]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
We have an excellent working relationship between our legislative chambers in Nevada, at least on the Democratic side. Obviously, there are differences in terms of the makeup of certain Assembly districts versus Senate districts and the number of Nevadans you represent, but as Nevada Democrats one thing we pride ourselves on is being able to work together for the good of the state.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
I feel the most beneficial legislatures are made up of a talented diverse field of officials with different career and leadership backgrounds. This ensures that all citizens voices are heard and represented while new ideas for governing today are explored.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Making sure Nevada is fulfilling her needs and obligations to Nevadans for their Healthcare and Education. With new and innovating jobs on the horizon, Nevada needs to pick up the pace in educating Nevadans to fill these high paying and unique jobs. As our population expands at a higher rate then our medical industry, many Nevadans are left out of receiving the medical care they need simply because there was no specialist available nearby or even within the state.[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Regardless of party or differences, both Governor and Legislators need to have a solid working relationship that can deliver for the people of Nevada. As each official is elected by the Nevadan voters, everyone should have a voice in legislating.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
It's always better to have solid relationships with all members of congress as each and everyone of them was elected by Nevadans to make each of their lives better. As a team, you can create a legislative agenda that fulfills the pressing needs of Nevadans in every district.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
FAIR[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Committee on Energy Committee on Healthcare Committee on Education[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
My main and only goal is to serve the people of Nevada to the best of my capabilities. I believe as a legislator I will bring new and solid solutions that will make Nevadan life better for all citizens.[3]
