I will continue to work for social justice and equality for all regardless of race , gender or religious beliefs . I want my children and Grandchildren to know that I worked to make their life better , I want to be an example to others to always do the right thing and care for others.
When I was ten years old President John F Kennedy was assassinated . School was let out early and I knew that something important happened from the reactions of my teachers and the emotional expressions on the faces of the adults at school. When I got home both of my parents were sitting in front of the TV . Both were tearfully watching the news. This was the first time I ever saw my father cry . A week of sadness followed as the World followed the arrest of Oswald , Oswald's murder and the eventual funeral for the President.
I was a Volunteen for Arkansas Children's Hospital one summer when I was 14 years old where I discovered that I liked taking care of people.. I worked as a waitress while I was in College training to be a Registered Nurse . I found this to be good training , learning first hand to work around and with the public . It was a good second source of daily income while raising three young sons on my husband's Veteran's Disability while my husband and I attended college . I graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1983 with a Degree in the Science of Nursing. I continued to work as a Registered Nurse for the next 35 years.
"Huckleberry Finn "; My mother read us books every night before bed . These books made us understand what it is to stand and live in someone else's shoes . Another was' To Kill a mocking bird". We were children that had everything we needed in a world where many went without. These books taught us compassion for others. I was very lucky to have the parents I was blessed with.
My husband was a Navy Medic for the Marines during the Vietnam War. He was a part of a Med-evac Helicopter crew . He trained ,lived and worked with the same crew (men he called his brothers) through out his time in Vietnam dealing with the trauma and terror that comes with picking up and treating the wounded and the dead. On his last mission his crew was attacked when they arrived to pick up wounded and he was the sole survivor of his crew . He only survived because the pilot pulled him back into the helicopter after he was wounded , He was never able to get past the survivors' guilt . Though he came home , got married ,had three beautiful sons and finished college with Honors and a Masters degree , he was unable to get pasted what happened to him as a young man in Vietnam , We were married for almost forty years . He worked for years as a Veteran's Rep . The job brought back painful memories that were always too close to the surface . Emotions , old wounds and alcohol eventually took it's toll . He died in 2012 as a result of physical and emotional injuries he received during his time in Vietnam. All combat soldiers have scars and those scars effect the whole family. He was the love of my life and I will always miss him and carry him in my heart. His struggle was my struggle.
I feel that the House of Representatives should be the House of the People . It should be accessible in a way to allow the general public to bring Issues to the State Legislators . I hope this continues to be the case . The State Senate Serves as a hearing board to assure that the Bills are assessed as fair and just before becoming the law of the land . Both chambers should consider the needs of the state and it's people before the desires people making profits from their decisions.
I feel that the experience is helpful but not always necessary . There are lots of jobs and life experiences that would be helpful when entering politics . Politics should never be a job you obtain to get rich. Becoming a political representative should be a patriotic service to your country and should only be given to people that want to do their best for the people as a whole .
1) Provide affordable Healthcare for all
2) Provide affordable Education from Pre K through College or Technical training
3) Provide clean and sustainable energy to assure a clean ans safe future for our children
4) Get financial corruption out of our political system therefore our government
A working relationship that does not follow political party lines . Decisions that meet the needs of all regardless of there race , gender , religious beliefs or financial status .
I think it is always important to know the people you work with . In order to work together for the benefit of all it's important to form relationships that allow you to open up and listen to all possibilities . This is the only way to make informed decisions.
As a Registered Nurse I feel that it would be beneficial to use my knowledge as a Nurse for the last 35 years to help others to understand the medical needs of the people. I would also like to work in areas that deal with the needs of rural communities and Natural Resources .
Joyce Elliott works for the people . Sadly ,there are not a lot of legislators that stand out as working for the people . the truth is that most people in Arkansas can not tell you who their House Rep or State Senator is and have no idea of what they do.
That is not something that I have considered yet . I think grassroots politics , starting from the bottom , is important , You can only really change something if you start from the bottom.
As a nurse most people are interested in discussing healthcare with me. More than once I heard stories of not being able to afford medication or to get a procedure or surgery due to poor insurance. Several people were upset at the difference in charges for things like a CT scan or gallbladder surgery depending on the insurance or the hospital that they were using . I met a women that has diabetes and only had insulin because a friends mother ,who had good insurance , had died and her friend gave her mother's left over insulin to her. She wasn't sure how she would get more when this was gone. In a country where we pay as much taxes as any other industrialized country (this doesn't include our rich)there is no excuse for people not having healthcare like every other industrialized nation does. Even Mexico provides healthcare for it's people.
