Two seats on the Magnolia Independent School District board were up for general election on May 10, 2014. In the Position 4 race, incumbent Kristi Baker was re-elected over challenger Ginger Russell. Newcomer Joe Duncan was elected to Position 5 in an unopposed race.[1]

Magnolia Independent School District is located in Montgomery County, Texas. The county seat of Montgomery County is Conroe. The county's population was 455,746 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]

Demographics

Montgomery County overperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.1 percent of Montgomery County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.3 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in Montgomery County was $66,422 compared to $51,563 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Montgomery County was 12.3 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[3]

Voter and candidate information

The Magnolia Board of Trustees consists of seven members. While members are elected to specific positions on the ballot, they serve at large. They serve three-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014 for two seats. Two seats will be on the ballot in May 2015.[5]

A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[6]

Endorsements

Kristi Baker was endorsed by all the current members of the Magnolia ISD board, as well as incoming member Joe Duncan. She also has a list of community members that endorsed her on her website.[7]

Ginger Russell was endorsed by Texas House of Representatives member Steve Toth, Texas State Board of Education member Ken Mercer and President of Montgomery Tea Party Pat Tibbs, among others.[8]

Campaign finance

No candidate filed a campaign finance report with the Texas Ethics Commission.[9]
