Margaret J. Kravchuk was a federal magistrate judge with the United States District Court for the District of Maine. She has served in this position from January of 2000 until she retired on January 24, 2014.[1][2]

Early life and education

Judge Kravchuk was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1948. She received her B.A. degree from Bethany College in 1970 and her M.A. degree in Teaching from Brown University the following year. After teaching high school in Rhode Island for three years, she attended the University of Maine School of Law and received her law degree in 1976.[1]

Professional career

Judge Kravchuk clerked for the Maine District Court for one year after her graduation from law school. She then worked as a prosecutor for approximately nine years in Bangor, Maine. During her last year as prosecutor, she also worked as a District Attorney in northern Maine. She was then appointed to the Maine District Court in 1985. She was elevated to the Superior court in 1990 and became the Chief Justice in 1997. She then joined the U.S. District Court in 2000.[1]

Judicial career

In January, 2000, Kravchuk became one of two United States Magistrate Judges serving in the District of Maine. Her duties now include both civil and criminal cases, including civil jury trial work. She retired on January 24, 2014.[3]
