I was born and raised in Miami, Florida, where I met my now husband, Howard, during the heights of the civil rights movement in the late 1960s. With a passion for civil rights and social justice, I earned her bachelor’s degree in 1972, followed by a master’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany in 1973 and a Masters degree from UAA in 1986. I then moved to Alaska and married Howard, a retired veteran. I began working in the Anchorage School District in 1974 and never looked back.
  • I believe three interconnected issues are paramount: teacher retention, teacher recruitment, and increased public education funding. These issues are the result of years of underfunding and legislative inaction that directly impact our ability to attract and retain highly qualified educators. Alaska is the only state in the country that does not offer new teachers or paraprofessionals full Social Security benefits or a defined-benefit pension. This makes it difficult to maintain a strong teaching workforce, which in turn affects student outcomes. I will continue working with local officials, state legislators, and stakeholders to advocate for necessary policy/statutory changes that will support our students
  • As a lifelong educator and advocate for our children, I know that parents are the first and most important teachers in a child’s life. The learning journey begins at home, where values, curiosity, and a love for learning are nurtured. I believe that when parents are engaged, they lay the foundation for their children’s success both in school and in life. The role of educators is to partner with you, the parents, to provide the tools and support needed to help your children thrive. Together, we can create an environment where every child can reach their full potential, not just academically but as confident, caring individuals prepared for the future.
  • As we celebrate the significant progress made over the past year, I am more committed than ever to ensuring that every child in our district becomes a strong reader by the third grade. With 57% of our K-3 students now meeting or exceeding literacy benchmarks, we’ve seen what’s possible when we focus on targeted interventions and support. Our goal is ambitious but achievable: by 2028, we want to see 46% of our third graders reading at or above grade level. To get there, we will continue to expand early literacy programs, provide professional development for our teachers, and engage parents as active partners in their children’s reading journey.
I am deeply passionate about public education policy, particularly when it comes to ensuring every child—regardless of their background—has access to a high-quality education that prepares them for success. I’ve dedicated my career to improving student outcomes, and making sure our schools have the resources they need to serve all students effectively.

I also believe strongly in policies that support educators, from recruitment and retention efforts to professional development and fair compensation.

Beyond the classroom, I am committed to policies that address student wellness, including mental health services and wraparound supports that help students overcome challenges and stay engaged in learning.
An effective elected official must lead with integrity, humility, and a deep commitment to serving all children in the Anchorage School District. For me, that means making decisions rooted in facts, fairness, and what’s best for our students.

Compassion is just equally as important. Public service is about serving everyone. That means truly listening to families, educators, and community members, understanding their concerns, and working toward solutions that uplift everyone, not just those with the loudest voices or the most influence.

Above all, I believe in supporting all children. That requires a willingness to listen, learn, and advocate for policies that ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed.
A school board member’s core responsibilities are to ensure every student has access to a high-quality education, oversee the district’s budget and policies, and foster student success. That means listening to families, educators, and the community, making informed decisions that support all children, and advocating for resources that strengthen our schools. It’s about keeping students at the center of every decision while ensuring transparency, equity, and fiscal responsibility.
At the age of 12, I proudly attended the August 1963 march in Washington, D.C., which was the largest civil rights movement of its time.
All of Anchorage—not just a select few and certainly not only those whose views align with my own.
The primary role of a school board member is to work with local officials, state legislators, and stakeholders to advocate for necessary policy/statutory changes that will support our students and educators. I am committed to continuing that integral work.
I have been endorsed by numerous legislators, assembly members, and union organizations representing thousands of educators and support staff.
