This measure was not put on an election ballot |
The Massachusetts Animal Shelter Euthanasia Initiative did not make the November 8, 2016, ballot in Massachusetts as an indirect initiated state statute. The measure, upon voter approval, would have established requirements that must be met before an animal at a shelter can be euthanized. First, shelters would have been required to contact local rescues and offer them possession of the animal not less than two days before scheduled euthanasia. The initiative would also have made it illegal to capture cats for the sole purpose of euthanizing them.[1]
Path to the ballot
Supporters had until December 2, 2015, to submit at least 64,750 valid signatures. If the initiative had the required amount of signatures, the proposal would have been put before the Legislature. The initiative, however, did not meet the signature requirement.[2]
