New York held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election was held on September 13, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wish to run in this election was July 14, 2016.[2] Michael Sullivan defeated Sally Jaroszynski in the Chautauqua County Family Court general election.[1]

Sullivan defeated Sherry Bjork in the Republican primary. He was unopposed the Green Party primary, and was defeated by Sally Jaroszynski in the Reform primary.

Selection method

Judges of the New York Family Courts all serve 10-year terms but their method of selection varies based on location. Outside of New York City, they are selected through partisan contested elections. In New York City, they are appointed by the mayor. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state and county resident, at least 18 years old and practice in the state for 10 years. This court has a mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[3]
