Three of the nine seats on the Passaic Public Schools school board were up for at-large general election on April 19, 2016. Incumbents Maryann Capursi, Craig Miller, and Peter Rosario filed for re-election. They faced challengers Juan Arroyo, Jeffrey Dye, and Rene L. Griggs. There was no primary.[1]

The incumbents—Capursi, Miller, and Rosario—swept the election to retain their seats on the Passaic school board.

Voter and candidate information

The Passaic Public Schools Board of Education consists of nine members elected at-large to three-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election for three seats was April 19, 2016.[2]

To be eligible for the election, a candidate had to be at least 18 years of age and a United States citizen. Candidates had to file by February 29, 2016, and they had until March 7, 2016, to withdraw from the race. The drawing of ballot positions was held March 9, 2016.[2]

In order to vote in the election, district residents had to register by March 29, 2016. Eligible voters had to have lived in the municipality for one year immediately preceding the election.[2]

Additional elections

In addition to choosing school board candidates, constituents also approved a $16.8 million general fund tax. This is equivalent to the tax levy from the previous 2015-2016 school year, meaning that taxes would not increase in the following school year.[3]

Passaic Public Schools is located in Passaic County, N.J.

Passaic Public Schools is located in Passaic County in north-central New Jersey. The county seat is Paterson. Passaic County was home to an estimated 508,856 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[4] The district was the seventh-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 13,926 students.[5]

Demographics

Passaic County underperformed compared to New Jersey as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.2 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.4 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $59,513, compared to $72,062 for the state. The poverty rate in the county was 18.2 percent, compared to 11.1 percent for the state.[4]
