Philip Cleveland served as the interim Alabama Superintendent of Education from April 14, 2016, until August 11, 2016. He was appointed to the position by the Alabama Board of Education to replace former superintendent Tommy Bice, who retired on March 31, 2016.

Cleveland remained in the position until Bice's permanent replacement, Michael Sentance was selected.[1] Under Alabama law, an interim superintendent is ineligible to be considered for the permanent position of superintendent.[2]

Cleveland has held a number of positions in K-12 education. He was an agricultural sciences teacher, a director for career technical education, and a high school principal. Cleveland has also worked in higher education, serving as vice president for learning and dean of applied technologies at Wallace State Community College. He also briefly served as the interim president of Chattahoochee Valley State Community College.

Alabama Superintendent of Education (2016)

On April 14, 2016, the Alabama Board of Education selected Cleveland for the position of interim superintendent. He was appointed to replace retiring Superintendent Tommy Bice, who retired on March 31, 2016.[2]

Upon being selected, Cleveland said:

I am honored to serve at the pleasure of the State Board of Education as the interim superintendent. My focus will be improving efficiency in state government and providing increased support for K-12 children of our great state.[2][3]

Cleveland was replaced by Michael Sentance, who was selected by the Board of Education to replace former Superintendent Bice.[1]

The Alabama Superintendent of Education is a state executive position in the Alabama government. The superintendent is the chief executive officer of the state Department of Education and exercises "general control and supervision over the public schools of the state."[4]
