Candidate website

Hodge's campaign website listed the following themes for 2015:

Accreditation
While schools in Western Henrico are accredited year after year, our children’s schools suffer which makes it harder for our children to succeed. In a county like Henrico, there is no excuse for any school not to be fully accredited. Entering the 2014-2015 school year, not one school in the Varina District was fully accredited. NOT ONE!

Literacy
One of the most challenging issues we face in Henrico is the fact that nearly half of the students do not read at grade level, and this is especially true in the East End. Studies have correlated low reading scores with low graduation rates and high incarceration rates. I will work tirelessly to ensure that Henrico County Public Schools is using the most effective research and data based reading curriculum.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
To succeed in our 21st century global economy, our children need to have the necessary skills and training. I will ensure that all Varina and all Henrico students are graduated with strong STEM and vocational skills which will allow them to succeed in the workplace. A trained workforce will grow our entire economy.

Teachers and Staff
We need to recruit and keep the best and brightest teachers and staff for our children. As an almost 20-year educator, I know the importance of the teacher as it relates to a child’s success, and I will be committed to finding the most dedicated and highest qualified teachers for Varina students.

Chronic Absenteeism and Truancy
Our children cannot succeed if they are not in school. I will work with school administrators, parents, and the law enforcement community to prevent chronic absenteeism and provide intervention and monitoring for chronic truancy. Our children need to be present in classrooms, learning, not out on the streets.

Discipline
Classrooms need to be places where students can learn and succeed. Disruptions will not be tolerated, and those incidents will be addressed. The solution is not to just call the police or suspend students on to the streets; however, our staff will be properly and thoroughly trained on the most effective behavioral management techniques that will correct behavior and provide positive intervention, as well as discipline.
