Montes highlighted the following questionnaire on her campaign website:

Why are you qualified for a position on the District 60 School Board?

I’ve proven how powerful a parent can be by engaging and demanding more for Waukegan’s children. That’s what I did when I joined Waukegan to College (W2C), where I am now a parent leader.

Since then, I have served on a Principal hiring committee, led the effort to get a qualified Spanish teacher for CSP, and improved student safety by demanding a turnaround lane at Thomas Jefferson Middle School.

But I am not stopping there. I’m now leading the charge for a WHS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program and for improved counseling for all students.

What would you like to see changed in School District 60?

75% of WHS students are Hispanic and many cannot compete with other high school graduates. This needs to change. I would like to see ALL children in Waukegan able to read, write, and comprehend English at or above their grade level.

I also want to see an investment of new, advanced, and challenging programs for our students.

We must raise the performance bar!

I also want to see improved respect, understanding and communication between parents and teachers.

What will you do to address the concern that only 20% of Waukegan High School students are deemed college ready?

As parents, we have the responsibility to work together for our children’s future, and we have to offer our children a more advanced curriculum or they will be left behind.

I will promote programs – including a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program – that prepare students for high-paying, high-tech jobs. I’ll also push for better-trained guidance, career and college counselors.

If elected, I will not waste any time! We need to help those 80% because they deserve a brighter future.[6]
