New York City held elections for mayor, public advocate, comptroller, and all 51 seats on the city council in 2017. New Yorkers also voted for offices in their boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

Primary elections were scheduled for September 12, 2017, and the general election was on November 7, 2017. Under New York law, candidates who run unopposed in a primary or general election win the nomination or election automatically, and their names do not appear on the ballot.[2] Robert Holden (R) defeated incumbent Elizabeth Crowley (D) in the general election for the District 30 seat on the New York City Council.

Holden's campaign website included the following themes:

Rikers Island closing
Bob is opposed to his opponent’s plan to close Rikers Island in favor of smaller community jails, believing that dangerous criminals are better off housed on an island and not near schools and homes. The problems of Rikers will not be properly addressed by simply moving them elsewhere.

104 Precinct staffing issues
The 104th Precinct is understaffed and there is too much real estate for them to cover. As council member, Bob will continue to advocate for a satellite precinct as well as more staffing.

Glendale homeless shelter
Bob created a coalition of local civic organizations and businesses to raise money to fight the proposed homeless shelter on Cooper Avenue in Glendale. A lawsuit was filed on behalf of the community, and the DOB rescinded certain permits. Bob also discovered the storage of hazardous chemicals next to the property. The project has been staved off thus far for 3 years and no construction has taken place.[4][5]
