Two seats on the Rockingham County Public School Board were up for election on November 5, 2013. Since neither incumbent filed for re-election, unopposed newcomer LaDonna Shiflet filled District 1 while newcomer Renee Reed won election over challengers David Briggman and James Elmore in District 3.
About the district
Rockingham County Public Schools is located in Rockingham County, Virginia. As of the 2010 Census, the county was home to 77,741 residents.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Rockingham County Public Schools was the 24th-largest school district in Virginia and served 11,802 students.[2]
Demographics
Rockingham County underperformed compared to the rest of Virginia in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 23.4 percent of Rockingham County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 35.2 percent for Virginia as a whole. The median household income in Rockingham County was $52,195 compared to $63,907 for the state of Virginia. The poverty rate in Rockingham County was 10.4 percent compared to 11.3 percent for the entire state.[1]

Method of board member selection
The Rockingham County Public School Board is made up of five members selected by district. The elections are staggered, and members serve four-year terms.[4] Two seats were up for election on November 5, 2013.
