|- We must increase staff retention across the board. Pay is certainly one factor, but it is not the only factor. We cannot solve the problem of staff leaving teaching without asking them why. These conversations cannot wait until exit interviews; we need to have these critical conversations now. Even more importantly, we must listen to the answers. I would propose that “stay” interviews, similar to what the Fairfax County Health Department has already done with their staff, would be one place to start to help make changes to retain more of our staff.
- Public school funding must stay in public education. The Fairfax County Public School system must retain its funding from all its current revenue streams. Fairfax County taxpayers’ contributions to our excellently-rated school system are critical - and so too is our funding from the state and federal government. I will lean on my close relationships with local, state, and federal legislators and work closely with them to ensure they maintain FCPS funding.
- FCPS parents, community members, and taxpayers deserve to be kept in the loop about what is happening in the school system. Too often, complex issues and their complex solutions get summarized into highly polarizing and oversimplified slogans and don’t tell the full story. I come from a communications background and look forward to using my experience to increase transparency and clear communication between the School Board and the Fairfax community.
