I was born and raised in the Springfield District and am proud to be raising my family here after a brief time away while my husband served in the Army. Throughout my working life, I have always worked for the success of kids. Starting as an instructor and camp director in the Fairfax County Park Authority, through my time teaching college English to incredible young people throughout our country, and now as a contractor supporting two exceptional Department of Defense youth programs focusing on at-risk youth and STEM education. The success of children and those just starting out in the world is always at the forefront of my mind! I’ve also served on the Parent-Teacher Organization, the past five years as president. I am excited to continue serving the Springfield and greater Fairfax County parents, students, teachers, and communities on the School Board!
  • We must increase staff retention across the board. Pay is certainly one factor, but it is not the only factor. We cannot solve the problem of staff leaving teaching without asking them why. These conversations cannot wait until exit interviews; we need to have these critical conversations now. Even more importantly, we must listen to the answers. I would propose that “stay” interviews, similar to what the Fairfax County Health Department has already done with their staff, would be one place to start to help make changes to retain more of our staff.
  • Public school funding must stay in public education. The Fairfax County Public School system must retain its funding from all its current revenue streams. Fairfax County taxpayers’ contributions to our excellently-rated school system are critical - and so too is our funding from the state and federal government. I will lean on my close relationships with local, state, and federal legislators and work closely with them to ensure they maintain FCPS funding.
  • FCPS parents, community members, and taxpayers deserve to be kept in the loop about what is happening in the school system. Too often, complex issues and their complex solutions get summarized into highly polarizing and oversimplified slogans and don’t tell the full story. I come from a communications background and look forward to using my experience to increase transparency and clear communication between the School Board and the Fairfax community.
Public funding for public education, healthcare access, pro-choice policies, and working hard to support people across the board.
I will be the first to admit that I am not a traditional politician. I have an interesting mix of experience that makes me well suited for this position, and I have never been able to sit to the side when I have a skillset that could help. I also work hard to live within a framework of integrity. Finding candidates that are willing to work hard while maintaining their own commitment and integrity seems like a pretty awesome formula for strong elected officials.
One of my first jobs was for the Fairfax County Park Authority. I taught little ones how to play soccer. That turned into becoming a camp counselor and then the camp director, and then I became a manager on duty at a local RECenter. It was an amazing few years throughout my college years. I loved working with the kids and patrons of our facility.
I love all music, and you never know what song I have playing in my head!
My father passed away when I was 15. I am the oldest of four kids, and I quickly realized my mom needed help to keep our family going. So, that's what I did!
While technically the school board will work to help direct policy for the county and work directly with the superintendent, I also see myself as a liaison between the families, students, and staff in our community and county services essential to their success!
My direct constituents are everyone who lives in the Springfield District, but I certainly understand I will be serving all the families and staff of Fairfax County.
I will support our diverse community by listening to members of those diverse communities!
