March 9, 2018: Among 18- to 29-year-olds in the U.S., 88% use social media platforms. According to a Pew Research Center study, just 37% of those over 65 say the same.[1]

College graduates use social media more than other Americans, and urban residents more than those in the suburbs or rural areas.

Overall, 68% of Americans use Facebook, and no other social platform comes close. Thirty-nine percent (39%) use Instagram, 29% Pinterest, and 27% Snapchat.

The other big meeting ground is YouTube. While it is not generally considered a social media site, 73% of Americans use the service.

As new social platforms arise, there is a growing gap even among the youngest adults (18-24) and those just a few years older (25-29). The youngest adults are more likely to use Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter than those in their upper 20s.
