RALEIGH, NC: The polls have closed and the results are in for North Carolina's ten state executive offices up for election this year. Of the 20 primary races, 13 were contested in yesterday's elections and only one - the Republican primary for attorney general - had no candidates. Eight of the ten incumbents are seeking re-election in 2012 and all eight will advance to the general election on November 6th.
Gubernatorial candidates Pat McCrory (R) and Walter Dalton (D) won their party's primary elections and will meet Barbara Howe (L) in the general election.
Under a new North Carolina election law, a candidate must receive at least 40% of the popular vote in order to secure the party nomination. In the event that no candidates wins 40% of the vote, the top two finishers will go head-to-head in a July 17th runoff election to determine who will be on the November ballot.[1] Six races are headed for a special runoff election on July 17th: the Republican primaries for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, superintendent of public instruction, insurance commissioner and auditor, and the Democratic primary for labor commissioner.
