Esser participated in the following survey conducted by DeForest Times-Tribune. The questions provided by DeForest Times-Tribune are bolded, and Esser's responses follow below.
What qualifies you to serve on the Board of Education?
“ | I have been active in the district for many years beginning as a volunteer for the Windsor PTO and later as the President. I am a member of the District’s Key Communicators group and Community Advisory Committee and have taught Faith Formation classes at St. Olaf’s for the past 5 years. I have genuine interest in and concern for the direction of the district. I have followed this board closely attending nearly all the meetings for the past 4 years. Having done this will allow me to join the board with the background knowledge needed to be a contributing member right from the start.[1][6] | ” |

What do you view as the most important issues/challenges facing the DeForest Area School District?
“ | The most important thing I can do is to understand the issues in their entirety. By listening to all the information presented, asking questions for clarity and then asking myself 'is this good for students?' or 'Is it fair to the staff?' I can better contribute to the process. A plan will come about and be put into place through collaboration with other board members, administrators and input from staff and community.[1][6] | ” |
—Sue Esser, 2015 |
Who has been the most influential educator in your life? Why?
“ | My mother has been the most influential educator in my life. Her commitment and understanding of all aspects of education has earned her much respect from many in the field. During her 30-plus years of teaching it was important to her to understand and keep up with changes in the world of education, whether mandated or just as a result of changing times, and the impact it had on students and colleagues. Implementing the best practice for successful students was always her highest priority knowing that what you do and how you do it really does make a difference.[1][6] | ” |
