What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
1. Getting money out of politics to dismantle the oligarchy of corporatists. 2. Ending the oil wars and bringing our troops home to work on green infrastructure. 3. Combating climate change by taking on the corporations that destroy our planet for capital gain.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Human rights/worker's rights
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Satoru Iwata was the former President of Nintendo and he didn't act like a company president; he would program games himself when his development teams were having trouble. When the company was faced with financial troubles, he cut his own salary in half to avoid laying off any employees. A true leader doesn't stand above his people, he stands underneath his people and elevates them to success.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
The Lego Movie: A humble worker who is completely fine with the status quo is radicalized by an outsider and realizes that he's been living in an authoritarian corporate regime. He learns that everyone is special and has the power to bring about change. Individualism and imagination are things to be embraced.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty, transparency, compassion
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I can't look away from injustice and I will not be beholden to any institution.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Listening to my constituents and coming up with ways to help them with their problems.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I don't want to leave office until the US is operating on 100% clean energy, the unnecessary wars have been ended, everyone has health care, minimum wage is tied to inflation, sex work is decriminalized, drugs are decriminalized, UBI is implemented, and worker's cooperatives are the new normal business model. I aim high.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
My parents must have shielded me from 9/11, because I don't remember the day. But I do remember the following year, 9/11/2002. I was 7 years old at the time. I remember other kids saying it was "the bad day."
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
A dishwasher at a family owned restaurant when I was in high school, I worked there for about 6 months.
What happened on your most awkward date?
I've never had an awkward date, I don't date people I don't already know well and trust.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Samhain. It's like Thanksgiving and Halloween had a baby. It's a celebration of the end of harvest season. Bonfire, feasting, family, friends, costumes, what's not to love?
What is your favorite book? Why?
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. It's a comedy adventure about the "missing years" of Jesus told from the point of view of his friend Biff as they travel from Jerusalem to China to learn from spiritual leaders across the East. I'm a big fan of theology and historical fiction and the characters are just so heartwarming and funny.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Freaking Spider-Man, that's an easy one.
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My Atari probably, I use it a lot to unwind.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Ain't it Fun by Paramore, just the chorus. It's been annoying me.
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Finding a stable place to live after my parents kicked me out for being transgender. That took a few years.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Establishing a bipartisan redistricting commission
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
It's where laws are born. A representative has the ability to take what they hear from constituents and write it into a law. If we can replace congress with honest people, the presidency will become less relevant.
Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. I think having people in congress from all walks of life is important. Life-long politicians continue the oligarchic rule.
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Combating climate change and dealing with growing ideological differences.
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Natural Resources Committee
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
Sounds good to me.
What are your thoughts on term limits?
Term limits are important to ensure that Congress changes over time with the constituency.
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Sure, I'd be interested. Wherever the people want me to go.
Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Nope. I'll just be like myself.
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
Hearing from people who can't afford their medicine is always hard. Hearing from parents about how their kids in the military were killed is unacceptable. I see homeless vets on the street every day. There's so much unnecessary suffering.
