Timothy Martin Cain is the chief judge on the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. He joined the court in 2011 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. In 2024, Cain became the chief judge of the court.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Seneca, South Carolina, Cain earned his bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in 1983 and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1986.[1]

On February 16, 2011, President Barack Obama nominated Cain to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina vacated by Patrick Duffy. The American Bar Association rated Cain Unanimously Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Cain's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 4, 2011, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on May 26, 2011. Cain was confirmed on a recorded 99-0 vote of the U.S. Senate on September 20, 2011, and he received his commission on September 26, 2011.[1][2][3] Cain became chief judge of the court in 2024.[1]
