An effort in Las Vegas, New Mexico, to recall Mayor Tonita Gurule-Giron from her position was launched in October 2016. The Las Vegas City Clerk approved a petition for circulation on October 12, 2016.[1] Manuel Martinez withdrew his recall petition on December 7, 2016, saying that he was doing so to avoid further conflict.[2]

Recall supporters

Martinez is a former campaign volunteer for Gurule-Giron who initiated the recall effort. He argued that Gurule-Giron broke promises made during her March 2016 campaign, terminated city employees without reason, and lost public funds through delayed water projects.[3]

Recall opponents

City Councilman Vince Howell told attendees at a October 2016 council meeting that he did not support the recall effort against Gurule-Giron. He said that he discussed any disagreements over policy with the mayor and city manager because "people make mistakes, we need to help them get better instead of pulling them out right away."[4]
