Campaign themes

2017

Pethe's campaign website listed the following themes for 2017:

EDUCATION

  • FREE COLLEGE: Seattle high school students deserve access to higher education.
  • FREE ORCA CARD FOR STUDENTS: Transportation should not limit students' opportunities.
  • OPEN SOURCE TEXTBOOKS: Open-source textbooks for K-12 and higher ed would save our students and school districts millions of dollars a year.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

  • HOUSING FOR ALL: Seattle is in an affordable housing crisis - it’s time for more funding for Housing First and Affordable Housing.
  • INCREASE DENSITY: Allow denser development along corridors of mass transit to provide homes attainable for all of our residents.
  • UPGRADE SEATTLE: Internet access is a necessity, and should be a public utility.

ECONOMIC JUSTICE

  • REQUIRE JUST CAUSE FOR TERMINATION: No one should be fired without cause. You cannot determine if firing was discriminatory if employers are not required to give reason for termination.
  • SEATTLE CAPITAL GAINS TAX: Seattle has an upside-down tax system - those who can afford to pay taxes should pay their fair share.
  • PARENTAL LEAVE: Six week paid fully by the employer, for ALL employees.[3][4]
