The candidate filing deadline was February 25, 2016, for candidates filing with signatures. The deadline for candidates using a filing fee to qualify was March 11, 2016.[1] Incumbent Nora Campos (D) did not seek re-election.

San Jose City Council
The city of San Jose, California held elections for city council on November 4, 2014. A primary election took place on June 3, 2014. Tam Nguyen and Maya Esparza advanced past Buu Thai and Van Le in the primary election for District 7. Nguyen defeated Esparaza in the general election.[6][7][8]
