Four seats on the Waterloo Community Schools Board of Education were up for general election on September 8, 2015.

In District 2, incumbent Sue Flynn ran unopposed and won. The District 3 incumbent, Mike Young, did not seek re-election, leaving Jesse Knight running unopposed. Knight won the seat. Incumbent Lyle Schmitt and Rhonda McRina won the two at-large seats after running unopposed.[1][2][3]

The Waterloo Community school district is located in central Iowa in Black Hawk County. The county seat is Waterloo. According to the United States Census Bureau, Black Hawk County was home to 132,897 residents in 2014.[4] In the 2012-2013 school year, the Waterloo Community school district was the sixth-largest school district in Iowa and served 11,282 students.[5]

Demographics

Black Hawk County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Iowa in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found 25.3 percent of Black Hawk County residents aged 25 years and older attained a bachelor's degree compared to 25.7 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $45,747 compared to $51,843 for the state of Iowa. The poverty rate in the county was 17.0 percent compared to 12.4 percent for the entire state.[4]

Voter and candidate information

The Waterloo Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Four members are elected based on geographical districts. The other three members are elected at-large. There is no primary election, and the general election was held on September 8, 2015. Four seats were up for election in 2015.[3]

School board candidates had to file for this election with Black Hawk County by July 30, 2015. To vote in the election, residents had to register by August 28, 2015.[7]
