Three of the five seats on the Nampa School District board of trustees were up for by-district general election on May 16, 2017. Zone 3 incumbent Bob Otten and Zone 4 incumbent Brian McGourty did not file to run for re-election, which left two seats open for newcomers. Allison Westfall was the only candidate to file to run for the Zone 3 seat. She won the election unopposed. Three candidates—Wendall Cass, Clinton Child, and Kim Rost—ran for the Zone 4 seat, and Rost won. In his bid for re-election to Zone 5, incumbent Mike Fuller defeated challenger Heather Lewis.[1][2][3]

Campaign themes

2017

Cass participated in the following survey conducted by the Idaho Press-Tribune. The questions provided by the Idaho Press-Tribune appear bolded, and Cass' responses follow below.

Board trustee related experience:

I have served as a parent representative on the Infant Toddler Council and the Idaho Council of Developmental Disabilities. I am also an active member of the Nampa High Band Booster organization, serving as Treasurer and currently President.[5]
—Wendall Cass (2017)[6]

Top three issues you wish to address as a board trustee:

The primary issues that I am concerned with as a parent and would be vigilant about as a board trustee are as follows:

1. Curriculum and technology needs to continue to be modern and relevant.

2. Music and fine arts programs are an important piece of our youth’s education.

3. Fiscal responsibility is fundamental to retaining community support.

4. Hiring and retaining excellent teachers and administration is very important to me.[5]

—Wendall Cass (2017)[6]

What you plan to do as a board trustee:

I don’t have a specific agenda in mind at this time. There are many critical decisions that are in the process of being addressed (a new superintendent being hired, changes to policy governance, etc.)[5]
—Wendall Cass (2017)[6]

Why should voters vote for you:

Voters should select me because of my unique and diverse background. My oldest son, graduated 2015 from Nampa high, has cerebral palsy giving me a better understanding of the challenges the special education programs face. I have two other children who will graduate in the next 2 years. As a parent, I lack some of the expertise and personal experience that our educators have, but this allows me to bring solutions from an outside perspective. In conclusion, my willingness to collaborate with the professional staff and my peers will be a great asset to the Nampa School Board.[5]
