Campaign themes

2015

Hinshaw highlighted the following issues on his campaign website:

Be Efficient and Responsible with Your Tax Dollars

While striving to provide a world class education to our young people, we also need to be good stewards of the taxpayers’ money. This balance is important. We must be respectful of taxpayers’ hard-earned money, and at the same time, we must take into account the value to the community resulting from providing our children the best possible education.

To that end, we need to continue to be prudent when it comes to managing labor costs, ensuring we can attract and retain high quality educators while carefully managing expenditures. In addition, we need to conduct a thorough review of the district’s long-term strategy. We must determine what level of financial reserves is appropriate for the district and what to do with any unused and undeveloped real estate.

In addition, we must ensure that the district is accountable to the public that it serves. We need to continue to strive to be as transparent with our finances as possible, allowing the community to be involved in ensuring their money is spent wisely.

Provide Thoughtful Leadership to Improve Our Schools

With every decision taken, I will strive to understand the benefit to the students and the community, as that is the most important part of the equation. This will allow me to make the best possible decision for the good of the students, the educators, and the community. Many of these decisions should not come easily and should involve thorough investigation of alternatives, consequences, and benefits.

As part of this process, I will seek to foster continued improvement in our schools. By better utilizing technology in the educational experience, and by continually evaluating the effectiveness of the curriculum, we can help ensure the district and its students are performing at the highest possible level. I would like to see our test scores and district’s ranking continue to improve.

Better Involve the Community to Collaborate in Our Success

We need to more actively involve the community in our children’s educational experience. They are stakeholders in seeing our district succeed, and we need to be working together in the best interest of our students.

This includes involving the community in Board decisions by soliciting their input on major decisions, and actively communicating the issues and our decisions to our constituents so they can hold us accountable. It also includes welcoming community feedback. I will be accessible and approachable to make sure that we are succeeding in our mission to create lifelong learners.[6]
