As a mother of four CCPS students, I am actively involved in three different schools at the elementary, middle and high school level; and as a third-year member of the CCPS Equity Committee, I see firsthand the work we need to do to create a supportive and high-achieving environment for ALL of our kids. My Master Degree in Urban Planning and Policy provides expertise for the complicated but critical task of planning for growth. As an Army brat, a Peace Corps Volunteer and as a licensed midwife serving families of all backgrounds, I am experienced working in all kinds of situations, with all kinds of people and resolving unanticipated issues. If fiscal responsibility is important to you, I am your candidate. As a mom of four in a family with one car, I know how to balance a budget and stretch a dollar. I have been endorsed by the Chesterfield Education Association Fund for Children and Public Education and the Network for Public Education Action. School board positions are non-partisan and as someone who grew up as an Army brat, I am well-equipped to serve in a non-partisan role. I am also proud to be endorsed by the Chesterfield County Democratic Committee.
  • A successful platform must be rooted in values. I value investing in relationships, communcation and transparency. Together we can build strong schools.
  • My platform is "Back to B.A.S.I.C.S." We need to start with meeting our basic needs and that means maintaining our buildings, fixing transportation and investing in teachers and support staff.
  • Given the fact that we have had at least a decade of deferred maintenance, we will need more funds to meet our needs. I will build the political will to make a deeper commitment to our youth; they are our future.
I am passionate about policies that promote community building and engagement. We need a strong ACTS committee (Advisory Council for Teachers and Staff) that has an assigned school board liaison and where teachers and staff from all schools feel safe to communicate their needs so that their voice can impact policy. I am calling for a free speech resolution, similar to the one passed in Richmond, so that teachers and staff feel free to speak their mind without retaliation. I am passionate about policies that promote mental health. I would like to start with increasing recess so that children have the chance to develop the social and emotional skills that are critical for mental health. In order to build community, we need to make sure that we are fully supporting our teachers and support staff. Supporting our teachers means increasing teacher and support staff salary, smaller classroom sizes, and less emphasis on high-stakes testing. We can tackle the issue of testing by starting with policies that call for testing transparency and that focus on creating an environment that reduces anxiety. When it comes to building maintenance, I would love to see a focus on energy efficiency and an emphasis on the important role of preventive maintenance in healthy schools. Last but not least, when it comes to student success/well-being (the S in BASICS) I am passionate about policies that create access for all students.
I started baby-sitting when I was twelve and earned money babysitting until the summer before I went to college when was a waitress in a local pancake house.
