From 1996 to 1998, Pauley served as chief of staff to former Missouri Speaker of the House Steve Gaw. From 2001 to 2005 she was deputy director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and public liaison to several constituencies. After that she was Executive Vice President of PrimeGen Power USA, a start-up distributed power energy company, and a project manager for D.J. Case & Associates, a natural resources communications firm.[1]

Pauley served as the director of Missouri's Department of Natural Resources from her appointment by Gov. Nixon in 2011 until November 2016. Prior to the appointment, she had five years of experience working as the deputy director of the department.[1] Pauley went on to become the director of the Missouri Department of Conservation.[2]
