Eric Brown was an at-large member of the Columbus City Schools Board of Education in Ohio. Brown assumed office in 2015. Brown left office on December 31, 2023.
Brown ran for re-election for an at-large seat of the Columbus City Schools Board of Education in Ohio. Brown won in the general election on November 5, 2019.
Brown previously served as a judge for the Franklin County Municipal Court in Ohio. Prior to his municipal court appointment, Brown was the chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. He was the first Democrat to serve on the Ohio Supreme Court since 2006 and the first Jewish chief justice in the state. He was defeated in the 2010 election. His term on the Supreme Court ended in January of 2011.[1][2]
Biography
Brown served as the Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court from May of 2010 until January of 2011. Previously, he was the judge for the Franklin County Probate Court in Columbus, Ohio. He joined the probate court in 2005.
Brown worked as an attorney in private practice for 13 years. From 1992 to 2002 Brown was an assistant state attorney general, monitoring news coverage of the tobacco litigation for the Ohio Attorney General's Office. He spent five years as a Ohio Courts of Common Pleas judge in the general division. From 2003 to 2005 Brown was a Magistrate in Columbus. Brown obtained his bachelor's degree and juris doctor from Cleveland State University.[3][4]

Opposition
Four of the seven seats on the Columbus City Schools Board of Education were up for at-large general election on November 3, 2015. A primary election was held on May 5, 2015.
Three incumbents—Gary Baker, Shawna Gibbs, and Mary Jo Hudson—won re-election to their seats. Eric Brown won the fourth seat left open by incumbent Bryan Steward. Challengers Jim Hunter, Bernadine Kennedy Kent, Tina Pierce and Ben Tyson were defeated in the general election. Brian Bainbridge and Robert Sharrah were defeated in the primary election.[5][6]

Funding
Brown reported $67,620.00 in contributions and $58,308.34 in expenditures to the Franklin County Board of Elections, which left his campaign with $9,311.66 on hand in the election.[7]
Endorsments
Brown received official endorsements from the Franklin County Democratic Party, the Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio and The Columbus Dispatch.[8][9][10]

In 2010, Brown ran for the seat to which he was appointed. He was defeated by James P. O'Grady in the general election on November 8, 2010, receiving 44.92 percent of the vote.[11][12]
