What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
My top three priorities are healthcare, education, and the environment. When it comes to healthcare, there is a lot we can do at the state level to protect Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and we must ensure that all Pennsylvanians have affordable access to healthcare. I will vote to expand Medicare to age 55, and reduce prescription drug costs. I will vote to expand Medicaid to include adults without children, and improve reimbursement rates for healthcare providers. And I will vote to improve the ACA, and make sure we protect people with pre-existing conditions. We must also improve the way we address mental health issues and the opioid crisis, with regulation of rehabilitation centers and sober houses, in addition to enforcing the parity law that insurance companies must treat mental health just as any other health condition. I will vote to use the new revenue from the taxes on medical marijuana to fund these improvements to healthcare in Pennsylvania. We must restore state funding of public schools in order to ensure that every child in Pennsylvania has access to the best education possible. I will vote to ensure all mandates are adequately funded, and that all school funding should follow the newly developed Fair Funding formula. In addition, we must bring down the cost of state colleges and universities, which we can do with the Pennsylvania Promise. I will vote to improve funding to the state university system so as to bring down tuition costs for students, make community colleges more affordable or free, and make college at a state school in Pennsylvania free for families that make ~$100K or less. We must also make sure our workforce has the skills needed to meet the demands of businesses in Pennsylvania, and workforce training and apprenticeships is key to developing those skills. I will vote to support workforce development programs and small business development centers. Pennsylvania’s constitution guarantees its citizens access to clean air and water, and yet we have failed in many parts of the state, including very close to my district. Curiously, Pennsylvania is the only state in the country that does not have a natural gas tax on our Marcellus shale, even though we are the second highest producer of natural gas, and 90% of what we let gas companies extract is sold in another state. I will vote for a moratorium on new gas wells in order to preserve our clean air and water, and for an extraction, or severance, tax on existing wells to provide funding for investment in renewable energy and rebuilding our roads with green energy infrastructure. All of these priorities can be achieved with the right leadership in Harrisburg.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Education is my life's passion: I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education with a Master's Degree in Education and Human Development, ahead of schedule and with honors. I am a small business owner who has dedicated my career to helping high school students prepare for success in college and beyond. There's no greater thrill in my life than helping kids realize their potential. My commitment to education is one of the main reasons I'm running to be a State Representative. My son was a member of the last graduating class from a blue ribbon school in my neighborhood. I was appalled to learn that cuts in state funding contributed to its closure, and to the school consolidation that recently took place in the Neshaminy School District and others across the state. I’m running to prevent this from happening again. Strong neighborhood schools not only serve students well, they raise property values; and when the state provides adequate school funding, districts can keep property taxes low. Education is a crucial investment in our children’s futures, and in our economy. Prior to starting my tutoring business and before the ACA was implemented, I was a Cancer Information Specialist who spoke to thousands of people who needed help paying for their cancer treatment because insurance companies were denying their claim, or dropping their coverage, or refusing coverage outright. I’ll never forget speaking to a man who was being forced to choose between keeping his home, or getting his treatment. No one in America should face this crisis, and we have to make sure that we protect Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA. We can do a lot to protect Pennsylvanians and my personal experiences inspire me to work hard to achieve that goal. I am also deeply committed to protecting our environment, and believe we must be more responsible with our natural resources. The UN report on impending climate change is a grave concern. That is why I support a moratorium on new fracking wells, and why I also support an extraction tax on gas companies. Pennsylvania is the only state in the country that doesn't have an extraction tax, and that is irresponsible: Pennsylvania is a Commonwealth, and we should all benefit from our common wealth. An extraction tax would provide the necessary funding for rebuilding Pennsylvania’s infrastructure, and paving the way to a cleaner, green energy future for our children.
