James Mathias Jr. (Democratic Party) was a member of the Maryland State Senate, representing District 38. Mathias left office in 2019.

Elections for the Maryland State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 24, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 25, 2014. Incumbent Jim Mathias was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while Mike McDermott was unopposed in the Republican primary. Mathias defeated McDermott in the general election.[1][2][3]

Mathias defeated Republican candidate Michael James and Independent candidate Rick Carey in the November 2 general election.[4] Republican incumbent J. Lowell Stoltzfus did not run for re-election.

In the September 14th primary election, Mathias defeated Charles Lehrer.[5]

On November 7, 2006, James Mathias, Jr. ran for District 38B of the Maryland House of Delegates, winning the first of two seats, beating Norman Conway, Michael James and Bonnie Luna.[6]

At the time of his service in the state Senate, Mathias and his wife, Kathy, had two children. He was a member of the Statewide Interoperability Executive Committee, the Lower Eastern Shore Children's Center Advisory Board, the Maryland Tourism Development Board, and the Critical Area Commission for the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bay.[8]
