In late March 2014, Magistrate Judge Peake ruled that thirteen state senators and representatives must make their email and other correspondence related to the North Carolina voting identification law public, in compliance with open records request. A coalition of groups, including the NAACP, League of Women Voters, ACLU and the United States Department of Justice, sued the legislators in order to obtain the records.[4]
Magistrate Judge Peake did allude to the fact that some of the information might not need to be made public based on attorney-client privilege. The groups had until April 7, 2014 to submit a report to the court on how the records will be categorized.[5]
