What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Stormwater Drainage Assistance Program: I am Chair of the Mayor's Stormwater Committee, and led the charge to enact a first of its kind in NC drainage assistance program. I served on the Unified Development Ordinance Task Force as a Liaison, and continue to find ways to assist our citizens to be able to develop their own properties.
What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the state government and legal system?
We affect the citizen at the local level, which is the most personal, closest level a citizen can be affected. Our decisions affect our citizens personally.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Winston Churchill. Courageous in the face of nearly insurmountable odds against him.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
My early years were spent reading the Bible, and praying. I try to pray each and every day for guidance and wisdom. I read a lot. All leaders need to be readers, they must continue to inform themselves on every issue confronting them. I continue to marvel at the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution of the United States.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
To be willing to speak the truth, even when others do not want to hear it or understand it. To be willing to be a Visionary to determine the best future for the city.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
A willingness to Listen, and a willingness to always be prepared.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
A lifelong commitment to learning, and a knowledge to know there are many sides to an issue.
What legacy would you like to leave?
A person who cared, who tried to improve his city in the limited time he was allowed.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
Attending Pres. Reagan's first inauguration in 1981.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Cutting grass in the neighborhood, and cut my own grass and neighbors for over 38 years. Sold books door-to-door in Kansas, while in college.
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Five Fingers. A fictional book about a Special Forces team, stuck behind enemy lines in North Vietnam. It is based on a true story.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Jack Ryan, created by Tom Clancy.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Maneater by Hall & Oates.
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
I constantly have to watch what I eat. If it tastes good, I probably should not eat it!
Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?
None which I am aware of.
Do you believe that it's beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?
It helps, but is not a requirement.
What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?
A willingness to Listen to the citizens at all times, and a commitment to constant, never-ending study and learning.
