One seat on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education was up for a special primary election on June 3, 2014. A special runoff election was held on August 12, 2014.[1]

A total of seven candidates filed to run for the District 1 seat in the primary election. They were Genethia Hudley-Hayes, Alex Johnson, Rachel Johnson, Omarosa Manigault, Hattie McFrazier, George J. McKenna III and Sherlett Hendy Newbill.[2]

Johnson and McKenna won the primary election and competed for the seat in the runoff election.[1] McKenna was elected to the board with 52.81 percent of the vote.[3]

The county seat of Los Angeles County is Los Angeles.[4] Los Angeles County was home to 10,017,068 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] During the 2011-2012 school year, the Los Angeles Unified School District was the largest school district by enrollment in California and served 659,639 students.[6]

Higher education achievement

Los Angeles County underperformed in comparison to the rest of California in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 29.5 percent of Los Angeles County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 30.5 percent for California as a whole.[5]

The median household income for Los Angeles County was $56,241, compared to $61,400 for the entire state.[5]

Voter and candidate information

The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms by specific geographic areas. Elections are held in the spring of odd-numbered years. In 2014, however, a special election was held for a one-year term in District 1. The special primary election was held on June 3, 2014, and the special runoff election was held on August 12, 2014. Districts 2, 4 and 6 were up for election in 2013, and Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7 were up for election in 2015.[8][9]
