A total of seven candidates filed to run for the District 1 seat in the primary election. They were Genethia Hudley-Hayes, Alex Johnson, Rachel Johnson, Omarosa Manigault, Hattie McFrazier, George J. McKenna III and Sherlett Hendy Newbill.^[2]

Johnson and McKenna won the primary election and competed for the seat in the runoff election.^[1] McKenna was elected to the board with 52.81 percent of the vote.^[3]

The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms by specific geographic areas. Elections are held in the spring of odd-numbered years. In 2014, however, a special election was held for a one-year term in District 1. The special primary election was held on June 3, 2014, and the special runoff election was held on August 12, 2014. Districts 2, 4 and 6 were up for election in 2013, and Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7 were up for election in 2015.^[8]^[9]
