Yesterday, Michigan's Family Court Judge John C. Ruck stepped down from the 14th Circuit Court after over 16 years of service.[1] Ruck's career on the bench began in 1996 when he was appointed by former Governor John Engler to fill the vacancy left by Judge Ronald Pannucci's retirement. Voters then chose to keep Ruck in office for the last 16 years, re-electing him three times in 1998, 2002 and 2008.[2][3][4] He also served as the court's presiding judge from March 2003 through 2011.[5] Ruck turned 70 this February, putting the judge at Michigan's mandatory retirement age and leading him to retire two years before his actual term expiration on January 1, 2015.[1][6] At his retirement ceremony, Judge Ruck commented on how it was to work in a family court:
This retirement will give Governor Rick Snyder the opportunity to select the 14th Circuit Court's new judge.[8]
