An effort in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to recall Mayor Tom Barrett from his position was initiated in July 2017. Recall petitioner Allen Jansen filed a notice of intention to recall with the city on July 7, 2017, under the group name Save Our City, Milwaukeeans Can't Wait.[1] On September 5, 2017, Jansen announced that the recall effort fell short of the signatures required to require an election.[2]

Recall supporters

The notice cited concerns about lead in municipal water pipes, the city's crime rate, and Barrett's support for the Milwaukee Streetcar project. The recall group's treasurer was Darryl Farmer, the leader of the Original Black Panthers of Milwaukee and a frequent critic of Barrett.[1]

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Milwaukee Professional Firefighters Local 215 emailed its members on July 7 about the availability of petitions at the union's headquarters. This email also reminded firefighters not to place campaign literature in firehouses or to seek recall signatures during work. Local 215 supported Alderman Bob Donovan in his unsuccessful 2016 race against Barrett.[3]

Response by Tom Barrett

Barrett provided the following response to the recall petition:

Nobody loves a recall, but I embrace the opportunity to talk about how hard we've been working to put Milwaukeeans to work. I think anybody who looks at the city realizes that there's a lot of positive energy going on right now.[1][4]
