Tomson's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Agriculture West Virginia’s agricultural industry has been and continues to play an import part in our economy. We must support our farmers to identify new and better ways to grow, market and transport their products. We must encourage participation in agricultural initiatives that establish new-crop pilot projects throughout the state. We must look at growth initiatives for existing agricultural products successfully grown and marketed elsewhere to bolster our economy. In addition, our Veterans and Warriors-to-Agriculture program must continue to teach transitioning veterans to grow food and harvest crops. West Virginia must continue supporting agricultural education, the Future Farmers of America, the Beginner Farmer Program, and 4-H all across West Virginia. Economic Growth Growth can come from a number of sources. We can bring new employers to West Virginia by offering things they value: open spaces, clean air, plenty of water and cheap energy. We can grow our existing businesses by improving necessary support services such as broadband, housing and roads. And we can create new jobs by creating new business opportunities through innovation. Education Education must continue to evolve within the state of West Virginia as we seek to grow our economy, create new jobs, and compete in the global marketplace. Current teaching methods, educational programs, and credentials for teachers are vastly different from those only a decade ago. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics comprise “STEM” and are an essential part of education programing as we look to the future—the future of our State and the future of our children. An additional designator, “STEAM,” deserving our full support, includes the Arts; those exposed to the Arts in the school setting demonstrate a significant increase in levels of future success. Energy Energy comes in many forms: coal, natural gas, solar, wind, nuclear, hydroelectric and geothermal. West Virginia has historically relied on coal as a valuable contributor to the state’s revenue. Now, the easy-to-reach coal is mostly gone. Natural gas is the most prevalent revenue source, but there are many who oppose fracking. Eventually the gas wells will run dry, same as the oil wells and coal deposits. We must find new energy sources that are affordable and renewable. Guns We West Virginians value our right to bear arms. This is guaranteed in the second amendment to the Constitution, but more important, is an integral part of the Mountaineers’ way of life. Many West Virginians supplement their income or feed their families by hunting our wildlife while thousands of tourists come here every hunting season to participate in an ancient and honored practice.[2] |
