My name is Dr. Ellen Lederer DeFrancesco, and I'm a passionate educator, community connector, and environmental advocate. My journey in public service began at The George Washington University, where I interned in the United States Congress and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Education degree. I taught English as a Second Language in NYC schools and earned a Doctoral Degree in Educational Administration from Columbia University, Teachers College. I'm an environmental advocate through my volunteer work with Climate Reality New York/Long Island Chapter and by writing for an environmental website I created to help people save money and live a healthier, greener life. As the editor and publisher of a family-friendly newsletter, I enriched local families' lives by informing parents about engaging activities and connecting them with local businesses. Now, I'm bringing my lifelong dedication to public service, education, and environmental advocacy to my campaign, where I prioritize people over politics and advocate for collaborative solutions. I live in Oceanside with my veteran husband, two daughters, and two rescue dogs.
  • I stand with the vast majority of Americans who support a woman’s reproductive rights. I will fight tirelessly to protect access to comprehensive healthcare, including reproductive services. Every woman should have the right to make her own healthcare decisions without interference. Women’s rights are under attack, and no state is safe. I am proudly endorsed by Eleanor's Legacy and Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Votes PAC.
  • During my time as a public school teacher and later as a PTA mom, I saw firsthand the challenges and rewards of being an educator. Having been a member of the teachers' union while working in New York City schools, I will tirelessly advocate for educators' rights, fair wages, and workplace safety. Teachers will always have my unwavering support, and I will fight for public education and fully funding public schools. As a lifelong educator, I believe in the power of education and will fight to protect our children and their schools.
  • Nassau County needs to be more affordable. I will work with unions to create good-paying jobs, support affordable local housing, and fight against predatory utility companies and industry monopolies that have run amok in Long Island. We must eliminate wasteful spending and secure affordable public electricity for families. Our senior population deserves access to affordable, high-quality healthcare, including home health care options. I will fight for safe, affordable housing that supports aging in place. Our older residents should never fear aging due to a lack of supportive resources.
I am passionate about fighting for clean air and water in my community, and it’s a fight I’m determined to win. Companies that pollute our environment need to be held accountable. I aim to provide more climate-friendly options for our daily lives rather than forcing changes that don’t meet your family’s needs. Numerous environmental bills have passed the New York State Senate, positioning New York at the forefront of the climate crisis fight. I'm eager to get elected and vote on them in the Assembly.
If I could be any fictional character, I would want to be Wonder Woman. Her strength and intellect are unparalleled, and she always manages to save the day, often on her own. Wonder Woman embodies courage, justice, and compassion, using her powers to protect and empower others. She navigates challenges with both physical prowess and sharp wit, making her a powerful and inspiring figure. Her ability to stand up for what's right, no matter the odds, is something I deeply admire and aspire to emulate in my own life.
Yes, I believe it is highly beneficial to build relationships with other legislators. Common sense and moderate beliefs are key to effective governance. Representing everyone in my district means working across the aisle to ensure diverse ideas, viewpoints, and experiences are considered. This approach allows for more comprehensive solutions and truly represents the interests of all constituents. While not everyone may agree, it’s important to listen and collaborate to make government work for the people. By building these relationships, we can create policies that benefit everyone.
