Dwight Holton
Dwight Holton (born December 18, 1965) is the former U.S. Attorney for Oregon. He was a candidate in the 2012 election for Attorney General, but lost in the Democratic primary race to retired appeals court judge Ellen Rosenblum on May 15, 2012. Oregon's current attorney general John Kroger (D), chose not to seek re-election. He will be retiring from office early to become President of Reed College.
Biography
Holton was born and raised in Virginia, where his father served as governor of Virginia from 1970-1974. He received his undergraduate degree in history from Brown University, and later earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia. Immediately upon graduating from law school, Holton accepted a coveted position with the U.S. Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney.
He joined the U.S. Attorney's Office in Oregon in 2004, prosecuting white-collar criminals and corporate polluters. Holton was promoted to head the office as U.S. Attorney for Oregon in February 2010, and served there until October 2011, when he was replaced by President Obama's pick for the position, Amanda Marshall.[1] As U.S. Attorney, Holton received significant public attention and accolades for lead prosecution of an Egyptian shipping company that admitted to dumping oil at sea. The company paid $7.25 million, the largest penalty for a water pollution violation in Northwest history.[2]
