Philpot was a Republican candidate for governor of Utah in the 2012 elections. He was eliminated from the race during the Utah Republican Party's nominating convention.[1]

The candidate filing deadline was March 17, 2016. Incumbent Alvin B. Jackson (R) did not seek re-election. Daniel Hemmert was appointed to the seat to fill Jackson's remaining term.
