Biography

Montgomery received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in 1975 and his J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1979.[4][5] Montgomery began his career in 1979 as an attorney in private practice in Kingsport, Tennessee. He then served as an assistant district attorney for Sullivan County from 1987 until his judicial election in 2006. During that time, he also served as the prosecutor for the Sullivan County Highway Safety Office for eight years. Montgomery has also served as an unemployment appeals referee in the Department of Employment Security for Kingsport, Morristown, Johnson City, and Knoxville from 1986 to 1987.[4][5][1]

Prior to his appointment to the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals, Montgomery served as a criminal court judge for the Sullivan County Criminal Court in Sullivan County.[6] He was elected to this court on August 3, 2006, and his last term ended in August 2014. He then assumed the bench on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals.[4][7]

Montgomery was one of nine candidates for the Tennessee Supreme Court seat vacated by former Justice Gary Wade, who retired in September 2015. Ultimately, he was passed over.[8]
